Tongpang calls for preservation of culture
Nagaland PWD minister Tongpang Ozukum said that Nagas must do away with the tendency to bask in past glory and aspects of culture that hinders progress while preserving and promoting those that aid progress.
The minister said this while speaking on the occasion of “Alisümang Liden Anempong Südok” at Mopungchuket village on January 29. Lauding Mopungchuket village as one of the most progressive Ao villages, Tongpang appreciated the villagers for their participation in matters relating to village welfare.
He also challenged the Mopungchuket villagers to retrospect if they were as united as before and urged them to live up to their patriarch village stature. He also hoped that the new “Medemsanger Putu” would rule the village with a new vision and ensured that peace and progress prevail in the village.
It may be noted that “Alisümang” is a trail near the village, which is traditionally repaired with fresh earth during the change of guard of village administration of Mopungchuket village.
It was recently paved on October 12, 2018 when Medemsanger Putu took over the reins of the village authority from its predecessors Riongsanger Putu. It is forbidden to traverse through this trail until the village elders revoke the forbiddance, and which was done today with Tongpang Ozukum as the special guest.
Later in the day, a cultural extravaganza was held at Süngkotenem Park that was graced by minster of Higher & Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along as special guest. Temjen appreciated the Mopungchuket villagers for preserving their tradition and culture.
He added that loss of culture and tradition among the indigenous people of the North East was alarming and called upon the Naga people to preserve and promote their unique culture.
He added that Nagas in various platforms talk about preserving their culture but seldom put it into practice.
He therefore urged the Ao community to “come back to the villages” so that not only the culture is preserved but the villages also progress.
Other highlights of the cultural extravaganza included folk love songs, cultural dances by Tazü Lenden Mopungchuket and Arküm Mongsenyimti, folk song by the womenfolk of Mopungchuket and a special folk song by the Mongsenyimti Village Council which was followed by a mass feast.
